Incumbent slate wins big in board election

Counting the ballots and proxies concluded just under an hour ago, and the winners are Ellen Gentilviso, Richard Kenny, John Sotomayor, and Tommy Schlanger.

Turnout was strong again, comparable to last year, around 950 shareholders. Winners picked up between 526 and 572 votes; the Cooperatively Yours slate came in well behind, with 356 – 380 votes.

All four house committee candidates won by unanimous consent at the annual meeting and votes for those seats were not tallied.

Update: There were some additional general proxy ballots discovered Thursday morning that had not been counted Wednesday night. They did not change the outcome, though the total votes that should be posted today will be a higher than the numbers above.

    1. Yes, i am very happy at this outcome. CY is only creating a hate among co-opertors, and no one likes them, no one wants them, and they should stop delivering mail that just gives me a headache!

      1. Why do you get a headache at the dissemination of information, a piece of paper? Maybe something terrible is wrong with you, you should check it out.

        1. Not only do we get headaches, our backs ache from all the times we have to bend down to pick up your garbage– uh — flyers. I don’t want flyers about vertical blinds or window-cleaning or carpet installation. And I certainly don’t want unsolicited flyers from CY. And you are all so environmentally conscious — what a waste of paper. Trees died for your flyers. Try to be consistent.

      2. Brilliantly put, Bill Richards. Microcosmically, they are the Obama administration. They managed to create more divisiveness among the races than pre Civil Rights movement. And this is what CY created here – not among races, but among those who were here before the buildings went private and those who came after. Not surprised “alyce1213” stooped to insults and diversions. It’s like when a moderate Republican makes a salient point — all a bleeding heart can yell back is, “Oh – go watch Fox News!” They seem (CY), to be a group of YUPPIEish self-serving, selfish, money-hungry folk. And it still hurts that some people paid $3,000 for their apartments and they didn’t. Boo-hoo-hoo. Now they’ll hunker down and have secret meetings for the next 3 years, recruiting stealths into their group – maybe they’ll next run in a block of a dozen.

    1. Are you the one who created and distributed to smear letter about the CY candidates? Are you???? I’m pretty sure you are.

      1. Hi alyce1213 — I didn’t write the “smear” letter and it was no more of a “smear” than the literature your group has perpetrated for years. Don’t judge a book by its cover is the lesson you should learn. You think because the “old-timer” cooperators don’t talk about their gifted kids or the fact that they’re foodies or don’t have that hipster “vibe,” that they’re also stupid. We’re pretty smart and guess what – some of us are honest and ethical too. What you call a “smear” letter I call facts that were gathered and distributed. What do you call stalking elderly people in the lobby day in and day out, people who didn’t know what a “proxy vote” was, and stealing their votes for Lee Berman and others? This time you couldn’t get away with it, but let he who cast the first stone… You should know the rest — you’re so darned smart, after all.

        1. What are you babbling about talking about gifted kids? That is not the subject.
I am not new here, I don’t talk about my gifted kids, and the smear letter was distributed unsigned by a real coward and full of falsehoods. There were no facts in that piece of trash.

          1. Your name is “Shriver,” so if anyone has any connection to government, it would be a “Shriver” before a “Wills.” Not saying you’re related but really – whenever you libs lose a point, then everyone else is gun-toting and Fox-watching and NY Post-reading and Bible-thumping. Here’s what’s so funny to me — if someone groups together all gay people or all African-American people, which they should not, you folks scream that they’re stereotyping, which they are. But why is it you feel so darned comfortable stereotyping people who disagree and/or don’t think like you? That’s not “liberal.” That’s fascistic. Republicans, Independents, Conservatives — all groups that are made up of a variety of people. Y’all stereotype when you feel like it, yet become incensed if someone else does it about a matter or person or group that the PC Police have pre-approved. Why don’t you get it? Judging an entire population of a particular group by your own prejudices is wrong. Period.

          2. Dood. take a chill pill. You are talking to your neighbors. Would you have this discussion face to face? CY is not perfect, but if anyone challenges the status-quo here, it’s a crime against humanity. Take a deep breath. 400 of your neighbors don’t share the love of your BOD. Deal with it.

          3. Yes, but overwhelmingly, the people have spoken. Go raise your own flip tax. And while not a “crime against humanity,” harassing people to death with a zillion flyers, often filled with lies or half-truths, And speaking of chill pills, maybe all of your little CV “elves” should take one – they seem to have spent the last year stuffing garbage under the doors of all the families here, lying by omission to the people who deserve the most respect – the senior citizens here – stalking all of us in the hallway, scaring us. But we’re just a little smarter than you gave us credit for. And now – you can start your paper war for three years from now…

          4. Oh – and last comment — you think that by running a banner that says “Cooperatively Yours,” along the top, that’s identifying who you are? Also anonymous but doesn’t fit your needs, so ignore it. You can’t handle the truth.

          5. Guess your cleaning woman does your laundry, so you don’t get to hear about others’ brilliant kids… Lucky you 🙂

    2. Could not agree with you more. Don’t you know that CY are the smartest, most honest, most interested-in-what-community-needs kind of group? Ooops – or maybe they’re a group of greedy, elitists who think they’re the smartest kid in class, (just as they think all of their kids are gifted and talented), all wanting to get original cooperators and their families out of here, salivating at the thought of reaping profit, profit, profit?

  1. I’m a new owner in East River, and I have to say I’m very disappointed in these results. I attended both the Q&A session last month and the meeting earlier this week, and given the lack of dialogue between the board and the coop members and the entrenched resistance to reform I voted for change. In particular, the sheer nastiness and arrogance of Ellen Gentilviso was so apparent at both events that I felt sure she would be ousted. Are we sure there was no fraud?

    1. The election process is very sloppy, which makes it susceptible to fraud, but there’s never been any evidence of more than a handful of questionable ballots, and certainly not enough to explain away the 200-vote gap between the slates. I believe in elections, and I think this one tells us clearly that there are more people who support the status quo than who support change.

By the way, I always try to encourage people to use their real names when commenting on this site, in particular if you’re going to say something negative about someone else by name. Would you consider adding your name to this thread, or editing your comment to retract the name of the board member you found disagreeable?

      1. Gee – was it sloppy last year when Lee Berman and your other crony got elected? No matter which side anyone is on, I refused to attend the meeting expressly because of the way YOU PEOPLE treat everyone. You are entitled, you think you are the smartest folks in the room, you are delusional because you think that because you are in your 30s/40s, you are smarter than everyone else. You have a real gang mentality and it was very easy to not vote for anyone affiliated with your group. Maybe next time, you’ll draft an Orthodox Jew and perhaps someone of color onto your team. You folks are quite an entertaining combination – thinking you’re the smartest folks in the room when clearly you are clueless. Grow pair, and run on your individual merits.

        1. I’m sorry that you are a very angry person, with your YOU PEOPLE and your using “delusional,” “clueless,” “gang mentality,” not to mention assuming how old everyone is.

          1. And I’m sorry you are so politically correct that you are correcting me for using the words YOU PEOPLE which I did deliberately because I know your white self would automatically be offended. I’m talking to YOU PEOPLE – the members of the clandestine CY – but your taking it the way you did makes me think you also think the shooting in San Bernadino is about gun control and not terrorism. Y’all really are a microcosm of the Obama administration. Awwww — bet you think I’m racist because I don’t like a narcissistic idealogue. HIL-LIE-RY 2016. For Prison. Ohhhhh – now’s the part where you tell me, “Oh – go watch Fox News!” Don’t mind if I do. And next time, CY should get some more Democratic tactics re: vote-fixing — maybe you’ll win…

    2. I was at the meeting as well, and what I saw were people being fed questions to ask by one individual. If people can not formulate their own true opinions and ask their own questions then that is pointless. I also heard all of the CY shareholders , sneering and booing like little pathetic children who do not have proper courtesy to listen to full answers without interrupting. Obviously your agenda is to promote hate as opposed to unity!

PS: You’re new here, you can move , no one will remember you

      1. Your response is the only hateful thing, especially the last sentence.
I was at the meeting and I dispute your claim: “what I saw were people being fed questions to ask by one individual.” You’re delusional, obviously, as no one else saw that — it didn’t happen. A lot of different people asked a lot of different questions.
Obviously your agenda is nothing — no progress, same old secret boardroom dealing behind the backs of cooperators. Some people were sneering and booing (to a small degree) because what we were hearing was crap — non-responses, self-congratulations and “we don’t do that.”
This co-op is stuck in 1956.

        1. I saw it too, alice with a “y”. that makes two of us. and there are others but it doesn’t fit your agenda, so just say it isn’t so.

    3. I was appalled and disgusted by the self-righteous, scolding attitude of Board member Ellen Gentilviso. How dare she compare an auditorium of adult cooperators — her equals — to her third grade class (poor things)? How dare she claim “I know what kind of cooperator I am, but I don’t know about you?” And more. What a despicable human being. Yet, somehow, she’s re-elected. She needs to wear a Holier-than-Thou t-shirt to warn people.

      1. All I can do is ask: please consider using your real name in these comments, especially if you are choosing to insult another member of our community by name. I’d like this website to remain civil, and no one deserves to be attacked anonymously.

      2. She can wear that t-shirt, and you can wear your CY t-shirt and carry your CY tote bag. Nice touch.

    4. How about the sheer nastiness toward anyone in management? I don’t care if you like, don’t like or have no opinion of Mr. Jacob. He’s a senior citizen, he’s done a great job here and even if you don’t think so, how does some 23-year-old punk talk to him with absolutely no respect, no manners. Disgusting. Your hipster generation seems to think you’re smarter because you can build your own computer or tweet on an hourly basis. No, you’re not. You’re disengaged, you’re selfish, you are disgusting. And I am not connected to the office or the board, and certainly not to CY.

      1. And how respectful of you to call a fellow cooperator a 23-year-old punk. I didn’t see or hear any 23-year-olds disrespecting Heshy — when did that happen?

“You’re disengaged, you’re selfish, you are disgusting.”
You should think before you write. Why do you call people disgusting hipsters? Because you are so ethical?

        1. that’s an opinion and it’s a reaction. and please take remedial reading — “Digusting.” That’s a one-word sentence, referring back to how disrespectful your group always is to anyone on the board except your own candidates. Like a verbal gang-rape. I didn’t use the adjective “disgusting” to describe hipsters. And you know what – when you’re 23, you may be a fine human being but you’re still wet behind the ears, so to speak to someone old enough to be your grandpa makes you a punk.

          1. “Your hipster generation seems to think you’re smarter because you can build your own computer or tweet on an hourly basis. No, you’re not. You’re disengaged, you’re selfish, you are disgusting.”
Anything else you want to deny?

          2. Why would I deny anything to you? You seem to know everything. Except how to spell “Alice…” 🙂

        2. And yes – I am that ethical. Nice words from you about Ellen Gentilviso. Am not a personal fan but I’d always go with the devil I know.

    5. Come on, “New Owner.” By the way, you’re not a “new owner,” you’re a “new cooperator.” Was there fraud last year when Lee Berman was elected? And board members don’t have to be nice — they just have to get the job done without being intimidated by a group who is so angry at people who lived here before the apartments went on the open market. No – it’s a much better idea to have two real estate brokers on the board. Yes, yes – I’m aware of the “conflict of interest” document they signed. Do you not think they can’t throw their business here to a colleague in their real estate office and split the commission? Not saying they would do that, but there is more than one way to skin a cat. No real estate broker should be allowed to sit on the board. Period.

    6. New Owner if your accusing fraud , you should put your real name on here. This is a tremendous accusation with criminal intent. Jeremy Sherber should remove your post. Oh wow, Jermy Sherber agrees with your post. Wow Jeremy Sherber is a hypocrite!!!

      1. I’m not removing any posts. But I am encouraging people here to use their real names — especially those, like you, who have no problem insulting other people by name.

  2. Just wondering why the election results weren’t your lead, instead of the foot-bridge and am guessing that, had your group won, it would have been.

  3. And just one more question — when I spoke with members of CY prior to the election, I was told by several of them that they don’t want the maintenance raised. So why is it that at the meeting there were calls for a 25% maintenance increase to pay off our mortgage? Even an accounting student will tell you that even if you can pay all cash for a house, you should take out a mortgage for the tax benefits. And I don’t have another 25% to pay toward maintenance. If you truly care about ALL cooperators, including senior citizens, people who may have lost their jobs, people working two jobs just to get by, which makes up at least some of our population, why salivate about a 25% increase? Maybe real estate brokers who profit from selling apartments or people renting out their places through Airbnb can pick up the slack…?

  4. No one on that panel mentioned raising maintenance by 25%. And I never rented my apartment to anyone, ever. Unfortunately it is easier to believe a lie than it is to learn the truth. Anyone could have asked the guard in building #1 and asked neighbors on my floor if I rented my apartment. But people chose to believe a lie. Just as it is a lie that CY candidates proposed raising maintenance by 25%.
