Proposal: Get an impartial moderator for candidates’ forum

Here’s an easy suggestion, one that there’s still time to implement for this year’s election: bring in an impartial moderator for the Meet the Candidates night on November 24.

Each year, the forum is moderated by the chair of the election committee, a current board member, whose bias for and against certain questions can be painfully obvious. An impartial moderator would add some legitimacy to the debate, and could attract more cooperators to attend.

Who could do it? There’s no one perfect candidate. Maybe the president of Hillman’s or Seward’s board, or the executive director of the Manny Cantor Center, or a respected local journalist like Ed Litvak of the Lo-Down. That’s just off the top of my head. Who would you suggest? Add to comments below.

Proposal: Independent election manager for coop elections

Just in case you weren’t already confused by the myriad ways to vote for directors of the coop, this explanation offered in the candidates’ packet by the chair of the election committee came as a nice draught of mud:

Remember, the best way to vote is to come to the annual meeting. But, if you choose to use one of these proxy choices, choose only one and follow all procedures carefully. If you fill out more than one proxy, then the later dated proxy will be valid. If you fill out a proxy you may still come to the annual meeting and vote by means of a ballot, but your proxy will be invalidated. If you fill out a proxy and then decide to come and you sign in at the meeting, it must be assumed that you voted at the meeting and your proxy will be invalidated. So, if you have already mailed in your directed proxy and are satisfied with your choices but you want to come to the meeting, please do so but do not sign in if you want your directed proxy counted. If you gave someone your general proxy, where you gave this other person the right to choose for you and vote for whomever that person may choose, but you now want to come to the meeting and vote for the candidates of your choice, then sign in, take a ballot and vote, and your ballot will be the one counted.

Got all that?

This isn’t all the coop’s fault — some of these rules are baked into the laws governing any corporation’s selection of officers in New York. But with 65% of shareholders regularly not voting every year, there are definitely things we could and should be doing to lower the barriers to participation.

Hiring an election management professional to administer the elections would give cooperators more convenient ways to vote. Votes could be cast online to replace proxies, and voting in person could be available in our lobbies for the whole day our annual meeting takes place.

For example, Election-America is a company that runs elections for corporations, labor unions, professional associations, and other entities, including Seward Park Coop. Touch-screen voting, guaranteed one vote per member security, and immediate results would encourage participation and trust in the election process. It’s a small expense to improve our democratic governance, one of the founding principles of cooperative living.

Corlears Hook trees to be felled

Two years out, the effects of Superstorm Sandy are still being felt in our neighborhood.

Dead trees walking

Since the spring, the tree population of East River Park has been thinned significantly as trees suffering the long-term effects of salt water intrusion have been felled by the parks department. Now the carnage is coming to Corlears Hook, where over a dozen large trees have been marked for removal, mostly along the service road next to the FDR.

Of course, the Hook suffered during the storm itself, losing a dozen trees, including three of the beautiful magnolias that comprise the park’s arboreal heart.

Any new plantings will need to conform to new guidelines that allow only for kinds of trees that won’t be killed by another flood.

A new group, Friends of Corlears Hook Park, has been established to help coordinate community involvement — contact them if you are interested in getting involved.

From general manager Harold Jacob:

October 31, 2014

Dear East River Cooperators:

Various complaints have been brought to my attention regarding the decreased water pressure and the fact that sediment or dirt was found in the water filters.

Please be advised that East River has three large water filters in each building housing a water tank. These filters contain charcoal, granite and filtering earth to remove the dirt. Therefore, this problem should not be happening.

Please understand the water, which comes into our buildings travels through antiquated pipes originating from reservoirs in Upstate New York. There is ample opportunity for dirt and sediment to be gathered in this way.

To attempt to resolve the issue, I contacted the filter company to request that they replace all the components of the filtration system and see if that solves the problem.

Below you will see a copy of the specifications of our filtering system. Please be assured that I will continue working on this matter until I have it resolved. We will keep you updated.

Sincerely,

Harold Jacob
General Manager

Also, don’t forget that you can probably clear up your own water pressure by cleaning the aerators in your faucet.

Reminder: Friends of Corlears Hook Thursday at 6 p.m.

corlears04From cooperator Michael Marino:
Just a reminder about tomorrow night’s meeting and walk-through – October 30 at 6:00pm. Representatives from the NYC Parks Department, Partnership for Parks, Community Board 3, and Senator Daniel Squadron’s office will be on hand to meet with us and discuss the condition and upkeep of the park.  We will be meeting in front of the small dog run in the park to do a walk-through of the park and discuss issues, improvements and possible plans for a clean-up day in November. Please plan to attend so that we can demonstrate that there is a committed group of volunteers ready to make the park the best that it can be. If you cannot attend please feel free to email me about any park matters that you would like me to bring up on your behalf.
